01 Jun Unblocking a Toilet
Please be aware that the following content is for information only and gives guidance in how to clear such blockages your self. Please ensure you use the correct tools and are wearing all the protective gear as indicated before attempting any of these. Do not carry any of these out unless you are clear on what is required and ensure you apply the health and safety guidelines.
Do not flush
First and foremost if your toilet is blocked do not attempt to unblock the toilet by flushing more water down it as this can overflow over the top.
Put on a good quality extra long washing up glove and see if it’s possible to remove what is blocking the toilet by hand. If you have managed to pull out a foreign object or something that was obstructing the toilet waste passage way then for health and safety reasons dispose of this in a tough plastic bag and dispose of it in a waste container outside of your property.
Once you’ve done so try pouring a few cups of water in to the toilet to check that the waste water line is no longer rising. If it’s not flush the toilet once again to check the blockage is fully cleared. Once complete ensure you clean and sanitize all effected areas thoroughly.
Using a good quality plunger place the plunger end over the most narrow accessible section of the toilet waste passage way. Gently press and pull the plunger while keeping the rubber end in contact with the sides of the waste passage way. The trick is for the plunger to push water down the waste pipe which can sometimes dislodge a blockage.
If you think you’ve been successful try pouring a few cups of water in to the toilet to check that the waste water line is no longer rising. If it’s not flush the toilet once again to check the blockage is fully cleared. Once complete ensure you clean and sanitize all effected areas thoroughly.
